The Client: Auckland Council

Site: Judges Bay Reserve and St Stephens Church and Cemetery, Parnell, Auckland.

Project Overview: Replacement of the existing aged and decaying pathway within the above sites. The pathway leads from the end of Judges Bay Road up through the reserve to St Stephens Church and cemetery all the way to meet Judge Street. There is also some existing paving surrounding the church which we will look to replace.

Goal:To provide a functional and aesthetically pleasing pathway that gets people through the reserve and connects the two roads. The pathway cuts directly through one of the oldest cemeteries in Auckland so will need to be designed and implemented in a careful way as not to disturb anything existing. The church itself is also of significance and historic importance so will need to be designed in a way which is respectful to this and adheres to planning rules around this. The pathway should enhance the existing surrounds and support them, not detract from them.

Process: Firstly, Thomas Consultants will undertake a survey of the park. We will look into any planning restrictions and understand the historic nature of what exists. We will survey the existing drainage situation and engineer what needs to be improved in that regard. An arborist will provide an assessment of the existing trees and advise on what we can and cannot do within the extents of these. After this analysis and understanding has taken place we will then design the pathway to adhere to all of the above requirements.

Outcome: The pathway should enhance the beauty of the park, bay, church and cemetery and allow people to easily and safely access what is already there. The pathway is support for what exists already.

The Value: Thomas Consultants are able to provide a start to finish service, with different professional input along the way. This means providing the survey, planning advice, engineering advice and design services. We can work as a company to deliver as a one stop service and make the process easy with a successful outcome.
