Orakei Local Board and Auckland Council
320-336 Riddell Road, Glendowie, Auckland 1071
Thomas Consultants was tasked by Auckland Council to deliver the concept design for a lookout space at Churchill Park, a large park in Glendowie with a rich history. Formerly a golf course, the park is now used as an urban farm. A golf club house once sat atop the park’s highest point, but it was demolished in recent years.
To create a space that showcases the site’s stunning 360° views and informs visitors about its history. Additionally, the lookout space provides seating, shade, and a place to rest. The lookout boasts significant landmarks and viewshafts, including Karaka Bay, Rangitoto Island, Motukorea (Browns Island), Musick Point, Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve, Maungarei (Mount Wellington), and Auckland’s CBD.
The project was picked up by Thomas Consultants at the developed design stage, after being workshopped with the Ōrakei Local Board, who were in full support of the project’s progression. The team consulted with mana whenua as partners throughout the project’s various stages to ensure a comprehensive design.
Locals and visitors to the area take advantage of this space as a place to reflect and enjoy the expansive views.
