The Client:
Auckland Council and Kaipatiki Local Board
The Site:
Monarch Park, Hillcrest
The Project:
Auckland Council engaged Thomas Consultants Project Management team to manage the Monarch Park Nature Play Space and Trail. Project cost is $230,000.
On the Northern side, we will create a nature trail through the existing vegetation which will include a log scramble and balancing poles and beams. On the Southern side, we will enhance the existing nature play space and add tepee frames and a stack structure for hut building.
There will also be a planted butterfly meadow designed to attract Monarch butterflies and reflect the park name. Insect hotels for butterflies, bees, weta and lizards will also be installed throughout the Southern side for children to observe and learn.
The Process:
Thomas Consultants Project Management team are managing this project from design to delivery.
The Goal:
To create fun and enriching nature play areas for children in both the Northern and Southern sides of the reserve.
The value:
Thomas Consultants Project Managers have worked very closely with Auckland Council and project partners to ensure project approval by the Local Board from the concept design stage.
The site where the forest floor trail will be built is challenging and full of weeds – while contractors have done some weeding to allow construction, continuous weeding by volunteers and community groups will be necessary in the future. For this reason, we are working with Council, Project Partners and Community Groups to go beyond project objectives by organising a combined opening and community planting day to sensitise the public to this beautiful site and project.
Partners we worked with on the project:
- Landscape Architect & Construction Monitoring: Bespoke
- Contractor: Ventia (Subcontractor: Decker Landscapes and Civil)
- Arborist: Tree Consultancy
The Services:
Project Management services.
Completion:
Expected completion date in August 2022.
