Thomas Consultants appreciates that a business is part of the community, and as such we enjoy supporting great projects and causes that align with our values both in New Zealand and overseas. We were originally approached by Auckland Council to assist with this project and due to the community aspect, we offered our services pro-bono. One of our commitments that is central to what we do is encompassed in our mission statement.
Our mission is: To contribute to our community, region and internationally through projects that enhance the built and natural environment, considering social responsibility and economic benefit.
We recently offered our instant testing services and soil contamination services to a local West Auckland community organisation MPHS Community Trust to reactivate a community garden in the north west corner of their Hub West Community Centre site at 27 Corban Avenue, Henderson. MPHS intends to work with the community to grow a vegetable garden as well as plant some fruit trees. They’re partnering with AEPA a talented group of retired local Chinese residents passionate about keeping NZ beautiful and connecting our diverse community through our community garden. It closely aligns with the ethos MPHS holds which is centered around: people pride place. Kathryn Lawlow, Chief Executive of MPHS Community Trust commented, “We are really looking forward to seeing the garden evolve and becoming a feature of our wonderful community.”
The site had some historic horticulture and while unlikely to be a contaminated it was suggested that soil testing be undertaken to ensure it is safe to eat produce grown through the planned community gardening activity. Thomas Consultants were more than happy to lend a helping hand to test the soil to assist this community project.
AEPA is pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the community garden construction project. The successful completion of the land test has laid a solid foundation for the future garden construction. They’ve said “It is an essential link in building an environmentally friendly, vibrant community garden, creating conditions for providing the community with an environmentally comfortable and healthy platform for their outdoor activities.”
