Mid-Eskdale Stream Enhancement Project is an urban neighbourhood stream restoration project initiated by Auckland Council in 2011. Thomas Consultants (Thomas) was engaged by Council for the provision of professional services to develop, manage and deliver all components of the project, with a specific requirement of the brief to include a strong emphasis on community engagement and empowerment.

The Mid-Eskdale stream site is a stream corridor with associated areas of council reserve land and private land ownership along the corridor. Thomas worked with private landowners, schools and local volunteer groups and Auckland Council to deliver the project. Our team provided restoration ecology expertise, project planning, physical works plans including a restoration plan for each private landowner, budget and risk management, resource consents, monitoring and evaluation, supervision of physical works, and community engagement and communications.

With an emphasis on long term engagement, the communications plan for the project included ongoing education, social marketing and other forms of media for getting the message out. All aspects of the projects focused on the goal of the enabling the community to take long term leadership of caring for the stream and its environs.
